David Attenborough's climate solutions

World-renowned naturalist David Attenborough has released a new documentary, Life On Our Planet, now showing on Netflix. The film traces his decades-long career and the changes he has witnessed during that time. While he doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to telling the truth about his predictions for the future, he does share some key solutions

1 - Reduce deforestation
Our forests are essential when it comes to our planet and the air we breathe. Reducing or stopping deforestation and encouraging biodiversity will help our forests do their important job of absorbing carbon. On an individual level, we can help by avoiding single-use products such as paper napkins and switching to tree-free toilet paper.

2 - Change our diets

To help make space for returning wilderness, we need to reduce the space used for farming, and the easiest way to do this is to alter our diets. Attenborough says that if we all ate a mostly plant-based diet, we’d need just half the land we use now. So try Meat-Free Mondays, experiment with vegetarian dishes and try ‘meatless’ alternatives like soy mince.

3 - Swap to renewable energy

The switch to renewable energy is occurring at a rapid pace, and by 2040, it’s expected that renewable energy will be the dominant source of energy. Take a look at your current energy providers and make the switch if you haven’t already. Attenborough also calls for divestment from fossil fuels, so check your pension fund is clean and green.

4 - Slow the population rate

Our fragile earth is currently home to around 7.8 billion people, and by 2100, it’s expected to grow to 11 billion. To slow this rapid growth, we need to help those living in poverty, and improve access to healthcare and education for everyone.

5 - Restore the planet’s biodiversity

When ecosystems are diverse, they are better able to perform essential services. Degraded ecosystems are typically missing species, groups of species or even large groups, such as apex predators. To help the ‘rewilding’ process at a grass-roots level, seek out trees, flowers and grasses that are native to your area and plant up your garden or balcony with them.
