How to make your bathroom more environmentally friendly

Swapping or updating your bathroom products, appliances and fittings to more eco-friendly versions is a great way to do your bit for the environment. Here are some simple ways to create a greener bathroom, whether it’s small changes like switching to earth-friendly toilet paper, or installing touchless tapware, there are plenty of ways to make a new or existing bathroom more sustainable.

Reduce your shower time
Did you know that a 10-minute shower uses around 350 litres of water? Reducing your shower time to two minutes can save a huge amount of water. To reduce your footprint even more, consider installing a low-flow shower head.

Ditch the single-use bottles
In the United States alone, 550 million empty shampoo bottles are thrown away each year. To reduce your plastic waste, consider investing in reusable containers, or try switching to soap, shampoo and conditioner bars. Choose soaps in cardboard packaging that don’t contain palm oil.

Switch to bamboo or recycled toilet paper
Toilet tissue is one item that every household uses and is a really simple swap you can make to play your part for the planet. Pure Planet Club bamboo toilet paper is completely tree-free and plastic-free and comes in a box of 36 so it lasts for ages. Our 100% recycled toilet paper is another excellent choice and also comes in a box of 36. Bamboo toilet paper and 100% recycled toilet paper are much better options for the planet compared with conventional toilet paper.

Swap out plastic bathroom accessories
Phase or swap out plastic accessories such as your shower caddy, toilet brush, toothbrush holder and nail brush for versions made with more sustainable materials.

Use sustainable and zero-waste personal products
For just about every personal care product, there’s a sustainable alternative. Phase out plastic toothbrushes and dental floss and replace with bamboo toothbrushes and silk or biodegradable floss, which can both be composted after use.

Air dry your towels
It’s tempting to throw your towels into the dryer so they come out warm and fluffy, however it’s much more beneficial for both the environment and your electricity bill if you air dry them. If you must have that warm, fluffy feeling, pop them in the dryer for a few minutes once they’re line-dry.

Reduce water consumption with touchless tapware
Touchless tapware can help reduce water consumption by up to 60 per cent. The controlled waterflow and automation functions ensure the water only flows when you’re ready to wash your hands. Not only is touchless tapware easy to install, it will save money in the long run when it comes to your water bill.

Save water by using the half flush button
Simple yet effective! Using the half flush button when possible is an easy way to save on water. The average person can save up to 15 litres of water a day by doing this. Check the environmentally friendly rating on your loo, and consider upgrading to a more eco-friendly version if you can.

Consider installing a sky light
If you’re renovating your bathroom, try optimising natural light by installing large windows or a sky light. Not only will this give your bathroom a more natural look, it will reduce your electricity consumption and save you money.

Opt for eco-friendly or recycled building materials
If you’re renovating, consider using recycled, up-cycled and earth-friendly materials like bamboo, concrete, steel, porcelain, glass, and reclaimed wood in your bathroom to make your space more sustainable. These types of building materials can be incorporated into your bathroom as flooring, recycled tiles, and more and can help reduce costs while protecting the environment.
